Welding Safety Clothing and BlackHawk's Solutions
Even a top-notch welder needs the appropriate safety gear and clothing for every weld, be it a small or large job.
According to OSHA, welding arcs and flames emit intense visible, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can cause skin cancer. Also, there is the more obvious danger of being hit by sparks or splatter that could cause a severe injury involving second or third-degree burns.
Here is a summary of the types of personal protective clothing that OSHA standards state must be worn while welding:
- Heat resistant jacket and pants – Pants should be a tight cotton weave with no cuffs. Shirts should be cotton with no flaps over pockets or be taped closed. Jackets should be leather or another type of heat resistant material.
- Insulated welding gloves - Gauntlet-type cuff leather gloves protect wrists and forearms. This protects against electric shock, heat, burns and radiation.
- Ear protection muffs- Protects against noise and prevents sparks or splatter from entering the ear canal.
- Close-toed shoes/boots – Must be rubber soled safety shoes to protect against electric shock, heat, burns and radiation. Leather fire resistant boot/shoe protectors also add a layer of security.
