Superior Abrasives, LLC recently released a new line of ceramic grinding discs for deburring and smoothing heavy metals. The ALPHA-KUT discs combine quick-change convenience with the durability and consistent quality of coated ceramics.

For cast iron and carbon, hardened and stainless steel

ALPHA-KUT is designed for heavy and intermediate stock removal applications. They remove burrs, slag, sprue and flashing. These discs can also be used to smooth, shape and contour sharp or uneven edges. In welding operations, ALPHA-KUT discs can remove seams and blend joints, especially in narrow or hard-to-access areas. The ability to remove material and smooth and shape with one tool makes ALPHA-KUT a versatile part of the machinist’s arsenal. 

Triangular grain self-sharpens

The key design element in ALPHA-KUT is the grain — triangular, precision-formed microcrystalline ceramic grains that “self-sharpen” through usage. These rugged grains are backed by rigid fiber to provide a consistent cutting action through the life of the disc, outperforming traditional ceramic grains. The sturdy design allows the operator to apply more pressure for maximum stock removal without prematurely wearing the disc. The quick-change feature permits the machinist to replace a worn disc or switch to a different material or grade in seconds.

While intended for regular use, ALPHA-KUT is a suitable replacement for small-diameter or light-use cutting wheels. ALPHA-KUT is also a practical tool for inexperienced operators to perform tasks without much risk to expensive workpieces because its material is forgiving and easy to use. ALPHA-KUT discs are available in 36 grit, and 1.5-, 2 and 3-in. dia., with military-grade nylon-type R-button attachments. 

ALPHA-KUT discs have been proven successful in foundries as a replacement for small-diameter cutoff wheels. Their uses are universal and include applications such as MRO, farms, construction and mining equipment and metal fabrication. ALPHA-KUT saves time and helps to lower machining costs.
