Tiny Titans: Seco Mini Mills for Micro Machining
When we think of “metalworking”, the most common images that come to mind are large pieces such as sheet metal automobile fenders, airplane fuselages, turbines, flanges, and structural steel frames. Big items formed by big drills, mills and so forth.
But there is another universe of tiny, sophisticated cutting tools designed for small, intricate cutting and shaping operations — tasks invisible to the naked eye. Welcome to the world of micro-machining!
The work of micro machining is all around us, from the circuitry in our cell phones, appliances and cars, to medical and dental implant devices in our bodies. Micro machining is also used to create intricate molds and dies for cast items like toys and collectibles. Miniature solid carbide end mills and ballnose cutters are used to cut and shape objects and parts in these applications. Some of these tools are no wider in diameter than fishing line or a strand of cotton thread.
Seco, one of the world’s largest providers of comprehensive metalcutting solutions (and a BlackHawk supplier partner), offers innovative mini mills to handle micro machining applications. According to Seco specialists, the micro cutters are made from precisely ground micro-grain tungsten with a SIRA coating. They are specially designed to machine ISO S, P and M materials to cut depths of as small as 0.005mm. Many of these processes are so fine and minute that they must be inspected under a microscope.
Seco experts also say that advancements in 3D printing make micro machining more practical. As 3D printing and powder metallurgy processes create pieces closer and closer to the desired final shape – meaning less roughing -- miniature tools will be in greater demand to perform finishing operations.
