Sandvik Coromant: Industry Innovator
The nation’s largest metalworking supplier leads the way in revolutionizing the business.
In the manufacturing world, nothing is truer than the old adage: Evolve or get left behind. This means staying abreast of changes in modern technology, better methods and new tools while keeping up with elevated expectations from the customer.
As competition gets fiercer, manufacturers are expected to deliver faster, cheaper and better products. It can be challenging for businesses to stay on top of all the changes and demands of the industry, but it’s absolutely necessary.
Take a look at industry leader Sandvik Coromant. The metalworking specialist is continuously coming out with new methods and tools that, in turn, help pave the way for machinists to streamline and improve their own production lines.
CoroPlus
In September of 2016, Sandvik Coromant officially launched CoroPlus, the first online tool assembler. In the past, CAM programmers have been known to spend much of their valuable time designing tools by choosing different parts and working out whether the individual segments will fit together, followed by downloading the corresponding STEP files for each part of the tool. Using the CoroPlus Tool Library along with the CoroPlus tool assembler, programmers now save significant time.
They are able to create exact tool assemblies that can be imported into the CAM system through ISO 13399. Some online capabilities of these tools provide regular updates of functions without having to physically inspect the machinery.
According to Sandvik Coromant, CAM programmers gain access to both intelligence and accurate data when selecting tools, tool paths and cutting data. This means operators will be able to monitor machines remotely and use data intelligence from the machining process to increase performance and avoid wear and breakage.
CoroTurn Prime
Another innovation, Sandvik Coromant’s CoroTurn Prime Twin tool holder is bringing multi-task and vertical lathe machines to a higher level. Twin-tool holders allow a machine to perform dual capabilities without stopping to change an insert between functions. Using the same tool, machines can go seamlessly from roughing to finishing without stopping. Tools include external turning operations in all directions, including CoroTurn Prime A-type tool with three 35° corners for light roughing, finishing and profiling and CoroTurn Prime B-type tool with strong corners for rough machining.

Employees need to be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to operate new technology or to learn how to maximize the capabilities of current equipment.
Training is not only about moving ahead with new concepts, it’s also a necessary part of avoiding hazards and product errors. Sandvik Coromant once again, proves to be a leader in this area. The company offers several forms of training ranging from online to onsite programs.
Training is Key
In Sandvik Coromant’s words: “Without proper training, companies risk falling behind. At best, a lack of training leads to inefficiency or an over-reliance on outdated technologies or techniques. In a worst-case scenario, you might be an aerospace company where excuses about an improperly trained workforce just won’t fly – because your products might not either.”
Online learning through Sandvik Coromant is available in the form of a 360-page downloadable training handbook. The information is broken down into short trainings with visuals that cover the basics of turning, milling, boring and tool-holding. More in-depth courses are hosted at several productivity centers as well.
They begin with introductory knowledge on turning, milling and drilling in different materials and advance to specialist solution training for complex components and materials, such as Aerospace and Power Generation. Sandvik Coromant also provides trainers who go out to their clients’ sites to train groups or individuals. You can purchase Sandvik Coromant products on our website by clicking HERE.
