Kennametal’s HARVI Ultra 8X: The Ultimate Metal Removal Tool for Aerospace
Kennametal’s HARVI Ultra 8X is the ultimate removal tool for aerospace machining. This is a helical shoulder mill with a depth of up to 9.3 inches and up to 8 cutting edges per insert. Adjustable coolant nozzles support chip evacuation and control heat in the cutting zone, allowing application specific coolant flow management.

His words:
[The HU8X is] designed specifically for the aerospace industry because of superalloy material with lots of metal removal involved. This tool is designed for high metal removal rate. The inserts that fit on the cutter are also 8-sided to improve your cost-per-component. We have a range of inserts for the bottom from 1.2mm to 6.4mm, bearing in mind that the 1.2mm and the 2.4mm radial inserts have 8 cutting edges and from the 3.6mm up to 6.4mm, there are only for cutting edges. Obviously as the radii gets bigger, you sacrifice half the number of edges.
I do need to emphasize that this cutter is really for high depth, high metal removal rates so the equipment that the cutter is used on needs to have the correct power. The grades are also available in steel and stainless, so there is some synergy for general engineering and stainless-steel engineering although you have a hard depth availability. If the market only needs half the depth, then you don't need as many inserts. You would if you were using a 50-diameter cutter going full depth; you would need 40 inserts or 80-diameter cutter going full depth of 102, you would need 50 inserts. But, if you were only doing half the depth, you would only use 25 inserts. So, if you’re only doing half the depth that its maximum will allow you to, then you use half the number of inserts.
It really is an impressive cutter.
